Clinical Signs:
The most common sign of colic include but are not limited to: off feed, straining to pass manure, looking at its flank, biting at its ribs, kicking at its belly, excessive laying down, rolling, sweating, yawning.
What to do:
Pull all feed and do not allow the horse to graze until further instructed. Continue free access to water. Give a dose of banamine paste or injectable banamine orally based on estimated weight. The injectable form can be given at 1cc/100 pounds of estimated weight orally only. DO NOT GIVE INJECTABLE BANAMINE IN THE MUSCLE. If you don’t have banamine, you may give 2 grams of bute to an average size horse or 1 g of bute to a pony size horse. Walk the horse for 20 minutes, followed with a 20 minute break, followed with another 20 minute walk. By then the bute or banamine should be in circulation. If the bute or banamine does not appear to make your horse comfortable, call your veterinarian.
