Lacerations / Wounds

For minor wounds clean the laceration or wound the best you can with dilute betadine or chlorhexidine. Don’t use hydrogen peroxide. Give a dose of banamine paste or injectable banamine orally based on estimated weight. The injectable form can be given at 1cc/100 pounds of estimated weight orally only. DO NOT GIVE INJECTABLE BANAMINE IN THE MUSCLE. If you don’t have banamine, you may give 2 grams of bute to an average size horse or 1 g of bute to a pony size horse. If the wound is on a leg or a neck, try to bandage the wound. Confine the animal to a small pen. Call your veterinarian in the morning.

For more severe wounds like a predator attack, impalement, equine broken leg, among others, please call your veterinarian immediately.
